Comments:
Opting to remake a retro game is one thing, opting to remake a beat-em-up, in 3D, is another thing altogether. Full respect goes to Dienye for even attempting this in the first place! Now onto the game... in the classic Double Dragon you scroll from left to right across various stages trying to rescue a girl. As you proceed people attack and you generally cause havoc punching, kicking and throwing objects at them. Retro Fighter does the same only in full 3D. You too get to kick, punch and wield various weapons in an attempt to dispatch the baddies and make it to the end. Easily the best beat-em-up ever made in DarkBASIC.
Pros:
The fighting is cool! You can jump-kick, punch, grab, throw and even have special moves like the Tornado punch or Whirlwind.
There are objects to use all over the place - pick up a bottle and you can smash the enemy over the head with it until it breaks where it turns into a broken glass bottle which you stab with! Or pick up a crate and throw it at all the baddies in one go. There are swords, sticks, knives and even a twin set of guns which the character can shoot the enemy with!
Each level is different.. you fight on the open street, an airport, the forest, a warehouse.. the detail is great and they last just the right amount of time
End of level baddies need beating! They are typically wry and insult you :)
The graphics are good and the animations work well
The music although taken from various arcade beaters has been totally re-composed and mixed into the game. Awesome!
Look.. just try this, ok? :)
Areas for improvement:
There isn't much range in the enemy AI however this was addressed in the final release of the game (available from the web site listed above) so enjoy!
Needs a bit of enemy variety
The guns should have an ammo limit :)
